Oil Spill reaches Long Beach and Pass Christian, MS

Well, I knew it would happen - but somehow held some hope that the oil would never reach our beaches.

I chose to move back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast because I grew up here. I love the beach and the pelicans. I love the calm surf and the serenity of the drive along highway 90. And now, I'm not sure what will become of our beaches.

Hurricane Katrina devastated the area five years ago. Things are still not the same. But the Coast was bouncing back, little by little. Surely we do not need another setback. Surely we could be spared another catastrophe - this time it wasn't mother nature, but humans to blame.

Oil has landed on the beach along South Mississippi. Our birds and sealife are in grave danger.

As I drove along the beach on Thursday I saw clean-up crews in Long Beach. I stopped to take some photos. On my way home, I stopped in Pass Christian and photographed the oil there.

Keep the Gulf Coast in your thoughts. Do what you can to help. Visit the lovely area and show your support!!

Published in the July issue of Parents Magazine! Nathan's Story.

To know Nathan, is to know a real tough young man. Nathan was born with a congenital heart defect. As a very young child he endured multiple heart surgeries, only to learn he also suffered from Congenital Kyphosis. Which meant more surgeries. You wouldn't know it by looking at him. He's full of life and courage. we could all learn a valuable lesson by knowing his story, Nathan's Prayer.

His mother, Karen, is a talented writer, hoping to one day publish their story. Until then, Parent's magazine chose to share some of their story in the July 2010 edition of the magazine. Find the story online here.

Mississippi Garden Club Convention

I had the privilege to photograph the Mississippi Garden Club's state convention this year at the Gulfport Yacht Club. It was made special by the attendance of the National Garden Club president, Renee Blaschke and Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel.

What a bunch of fun this group has. And from attending I learned how much our local garden clubs contribute to the community, from planting trees to beautifying our streets, to funding scholarships for our youth.

What is a senior rep you ask?
You will be a representative at your school for Tilley Photography. You will pass out cards with your own photos on them and get your classmates excited about senior portraits. I promise no stuffy fake backgrounds here – just fun custom senior sessions that you will WANT to show off. Also, you’ll keep an eye out for who you think will be a great rep from the Class of 2012!

What do I get?
You get two free sessions: one in the spring and one in the fall. The first session must be completed this Spring for your rep cards that you will be handing out. You’ll get free prints from each session, 50 senior contact cards (in addition to rep cards), and unlimited web images to share via Facebook and email. There will be prints, money, prizes and free goodies for referrals, including an iPod Touch for my top representative! Already have an iPod Touch? Then you’ll get an iTunes gift card worth $200. You also receive 50% off any other service or product with me during your rep program. I may also offer additional specials just for you throughout the year. Your images may be used on my website and in promotional materials, so your parents’ permission and signature is required.

Who is eligible?
High school students for the Class of 2011. You must be outgoing, full of energy, and involved in school activities. I will be accepting one senior from each of the following schools (contact me if your school is not listed):

Do you provide yearbook photos?
Most schools require you to use their contracted photographer. But the sittings with them are usually free and include the yearbook submission. Your shoots with me are on location and customized for you, but do not take the place of your summer senior sitting for the yearbook.

I *DO* offer them and will also provide a free yearbook submission as well for students who prefer to use me for the yearbook submission. Check with your school for requirements. I have the standard yearbook backgrounds and senior drapings if this is required. Your shoots with me are on location and customized for you. Before or after the on-location shoot we will take the studio senior shot at my home studio.

Portrait Party, June 4th and 6th!

Details:

What this is not: stuffy portraits with fake backdrops
What this is: a fun portrait session capturing your little person being themselves

Where: My house, rain or shine! If it rains, we’ll do some stuff indoors.
When: June 4th, 5:00-7:00; and June 6th from 2:00-7:00 (you book a 30 minute time slot)
Investment: $45 per child or $80 for up to four siblings. (get individual pictures of each sibling as well as a group shot)

So, what’s a portrait party? It’s a mini portrait session with all the frills of a full portrait session. You get a password protected online gallery with 10-15 touched up images, two 5x7’s, 4x6 proofs of each image to keep, and four digital web files to share.* You will also get 30% off all prints and canvas wraps for a limited time after the portrait party.

Sibling sessions are one hour and include four 5x7’s, 4x6 proofs of each image and 6 digital web files.

One lucky person from the session will win a disk with all the high resolution images (print quality).

18-month-old Emma

Emma was a real doll. She just turned 18 months and was as cute as could be. She wore a few Easter outfits for the shoot and she just smiled away. She was too smart for us though! Once she figured out we were taking her picture she played hard to get!

Comments for Cans!

I got a great idea from some collegues of mine, MKD Photography. And I decided to borrow the idea.

What a great way to help out people in need. And in these economic times, there are a lot of people in need.

So here's how it works. You can leave a comment anywhere on my blog. Scroll through past posts and post under your favorite set of wedding or portrait images. Tell me what you like (or don't like) about them. For each comment we recieve between now and Friday, December 12th, we'll donate a can to the local food bank. And if we reach 50 comments by 5pm on Friday, we'll DOUBLE the amount of cans we donate!

Out of the Office and other business

I will be away on travel (My Father's 60th Birthday Party!) from Thursday, October 9th returning Monday, October 13th.

Lastly, you have three more days to submit your photo choices for album designs to meet the holiday deadline. If you have already sent them to me, I have them and you are good to go to receive them in time for the holidays.
